God exists, and He created everything that exists, which means He owns it all.  The Owner sets the rules.  The first people God created broke the law.  Death entered the world through the curse God placed on the universe.  Thenceforth, every human being ever conceived begins its life bound for hell because of the damning curse—everyone from Mother Teresa to Adolf Hitler—you, me, everyone, past, present, and future.

The only way to have the sin erased is for someone to take the penalty for our crimes.

One man cannot take the punishment for another—he has his own debt to pay.  He pays it with his life, and since he has only one with which to pay, he cannot give it for himself and another.

This is where God steps in.  He came to earth—fully God and fully man—to pay for your damning crimes which has you automatically bound toward hell.  Since God has no curse upon Himself, He had an infinitely perfect life to donate on behalf of man.

The Messiah, God in bodily form, died to take your punishment; He paid your fine of an eternity in torment in the lake of fire.

How can this payment cover your debt of hell to God?  It's not by attending church, being baptized, taking the sacraments, praying a prayer, walking an aisle, or doing good things.  (Doing these things in attempt to be acceptable in God's eyes is actually an insult to Him.)  Instead, you must repent of your crimes and believe that God took your punishment away through His own death.

If you do this, then you will have eternal life in God's intended perfect world, just like He created in the first place, but this time, you will be His twice—He made you, and He bought you with His life.  The Last Adam (Christ) undid the curse which was upon the descendants of the first Adam.
